In previous post I mentioned how getting off of hormonal birth control changed my life.
Now, let me tell you how I got to the place where I no longer need birth control pills and haven’t needed them in the past 20 years….
I was 20 when I decided I didn’t want to be on The Pill anymore. But, I also realized I didn’t know how to protect myself from pregnancy and since I wasn’t ready to have kids, I needed to figure this out fast!
That’s when I started researching for information. I found myself knee deep in scientific journals learning about what the scientists knew about the female cycle, how conception occurs and how herbs affect the reproductive cycle.
I didn’t know it would turn into a journey of self discovery that would teach me my body was more amazing than I ever imagined. And… by educating myself about my body, I discovered how to navigate the waters of my fertility without having to rely on hormones.
I was free! I would never be a slave to hormonal birth control again.
It was so empowering to know that I was making a conscious choice each month about my future. It was so empowering to release all of the fear and anxiety around sex that was connected to the fear of getting pregnant. It was so much easier to be present.
I realized I had discovered something wonderful and amazing that most women miss out on. But, I didn’t want to keep this to myself, so I started teaching it to others.
So, allow me to introduce you to the different types of natural birth control:
When someone says natural birth control or fertility awareness it can mean 1 of 3 things….
1 – They might mean the Rhythm Method, which uses your cycle history to make an educated guess about what your cycle will do in the future. This is often called the Calendar method and is what many phone apps use to track your cycle. The problem with this method is it relies on history and not what is actually happening in the body. Just because you’ve ovulated consistently in the past it doesn’t mean that this cycle will follow your previous pattern. Lots of things can disrupt ovulation (but more about that at a later time).
2 – Natural Family Planning helps couples space their children and is generally taught with religious overtones. A couple is taught to abstain and avoid genital contact during the fertile times of the cycle and assumes that having children is part of the master plan. My first experience with NFP gave me the impression it was a method to help you have kids. The use of any modern contraceptive is frowned on.
3 – Fertility awareness and fertility awareness methods (this is what I teach). Fertility Awareness Methods (FAM) are a collection of science-based methods of observing and measuring the signs and signals your body sends each month and teaches you how to use that information to avoid or achieve pregnancy as desired. FAM allows the user the freedom of using non-hormonal methods of birth control methods if desired for additional protection.
In addition to the usual techniques, I teach other lesser known fertility awareness methods that will allow you greater flexibility in your choices.
I also teach how herbs can be used to influence the cycle in a variety of ways.
If your daughter has her period, and you’d like for her to know everything she needs to know in order to successfully manage her fertility, then I invite you to take a look at this new course that I’m offering. When she does becomes sexually active, she will know how to protect herself from unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
This course is also a great opportunity to bond with your daughter and help you open up the important conversations about sex. To enroll yourself and/or your daughter into this life changing opportunity, click here to join.
